An inaugural exploration of materiality, perception, and presence.
Conditions of Appearance inaugurates SEPT’s new 300m² flagship gallery in Knokke, marking a significant new chapter in the gallery’s development and commitment to contemporary art.
Bringing together works by Kwang Bum Jang, Zheng Lu, Joan Saló, Enrico Bach, Gary Schlingheider, and Benedikt Leonhardt, the exhibition explores the ways in which form emerges through material, light, texture, and space. Across painting, sculpture, and mixed-media practices, the artists presented share a common attention to transformation, inviting viewers to experience works that reveal themselves gradually through movement, perception, and proximity.
From Kwang Bum Jang’s meticulously layered surfaces and Zheng Lu’s dynamic sculptural forms to the spatial investigations of Benedikt Leonhardt, the expressive compositions of Joan Saló, the psychological landscapes of Enrico Bach, and the material sensitivity of Gary Schlingheider, each practice offers a distinct approach to the notion of appearance.
Conceived as an introduction to the gallery’s curatorial vision, Conditions of Appearance establishes a dialogue between artists whose works challenge fixed interpretations while maintaining a strong relationship to craftsmanship, materiality, and contemporary experience. Together, they transform the new space into a place where perception remains active, fluid, and constantly evolving.
