JOANA SCHNEIDER GERMANY, b. 1990

Biography

Joana Schneider (b. 1990, Munich) is a contemporary textile artist whose practice redefines the sculptural potential of fiber and rope. Working primarily with reclaimed maritime materials, she transforms elements associated with labor, resistance, and utility into carefully structured compositions marked by precision, balance, and material intelligence.

Schneider’s works are built through thousands of hand-bound gestures, where repetition becomes a method of construction rather than ornament. Her approach shifts the perception of textile from craft to architecture: surfaces are layered, volumes emerge through tension and compression, and softness is replaced by density, clarity, and control. The result is a body of work that is both tactile and rigorous, inviting close engagement while maintaining a strong spatial presence.

Her practice has gained significant international recognition, including a museum solo exhibition Otherworldly at the Groninger Museum, accompanied by the acquisition of multiple works for the museum’s permanent collection — a defining milestone for an artist of her generation. Schneider’s work is held in several institutional collections and has been presented in major exhibitions across Europe.
