Overzicht

For the 2024 edition of Art on Paper Brussels, held at the iconic Gare Maritime of Tour & Taxis, Galerie SEPT presented a solo exhibition dedicated to South Korean artist Lee Hyun Joung, marking her first presentation at the fair in Brussels and celebrating a close artistic collaboration established in 2018.

As one of the artist's earliest and principal representing galleries, Galerie SEPT has accompanied the evolution of her practice, rooted in the dialogue between Korean artistic traditions and contemporary abstraction.

This presentation offered an intimate exploration of her distinctive approach to Hanji, traditional Korean paper, which she transforms into intricate, sculptural landscapes through the accumulation of ink, texture, and repetitive gestures.

Moving beyond the conventional boundaries of drawing, Lee Hyun Joung approaches paper as a living material. Each line becomes a trace of time, each fold a memory of movement, giving rise to imaginary topographies that evoke mountains, flowing water, and the ever-changing forces of nature. Her compositions unfold between fragility and strength, stillness and motion, inviting viewers into a contemplative experience that is both physical and spiritual.

Presented within Art on Paper, Brussels' international fair dedicated to drawing and works on paper, the solo exhibition highlighted the extraordinary expressive possibilities of this medium, revealing how an ancestral material can become the foundation of a deeply contemporary artistic language.

Through this presentation, Galerie SEPT reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to Lee Hyun Joung's work, bringing her singular vision to an international audience of collectors and art professionals, and celebrating an artistic journey shaped by trust, experimentation, and a shared sensitivity to the poetry of nature.
