Maria Melisa Tatari Romanian, 1996

Biographie

Maria Melisa Tatar  is a Romanian-born artist based in Berlin whose practice explores the fluidity of human identity and the continuous transformation of the body.

Introduced to painting at an early age at Școala Populară de Artă, she later pursued oil painting at the Istanbul Art Academy before obtaining a BFA in Graphic Design. This multidisciplinary background informs a distinctive visual language in which figuration and abstraction converge.

Through fragmented silhouettes, expressive geometries, and bold distortions, Tatar reimagines the human form as something constantly evolving. Her compositions capture figures suspended between states of rupture and reconstruction, reflecting the complexities of identity, vulnerability, and personal transformation.

At the core of her artistic practice lies the belief that the human experience is defined not by permanence, but by an ongoing process of becoming. Her paintings embrace this sense of incompleteness, revealing a delicate tension between fragmentation and unity, instability and resilience.

Through an instinctive yet carefully constructed approach to painting, M. Melisa Tatar invites viewers to consider the human condition as an ever-evolving dialogue between what we are, what we have been, and what we are becoming.
