GARY SCHLINGHEIDER GERMANY, b. 1983

Biography
Positioned between painting and sculpture, the work draws on color, line, and spatial reduction to convert form into a perceptual event.

Gary Schlingheider’s practice explores the fertile threshold between painting and sculpture. Focusing on color and form, he creates large-scale works defined by opaque, saturated hues and a reduced geometric vocabulary. Drawing on the legacy of artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Frank Stella, he develops a visual language in which pictorial surface and sculptural presence increasingly converge.

In his sculptural works, Schlingheider abstracts everyday forms into clear, elementary structures that are activated by their relationship to space. Positioned on the floor, against the wall, or in layered constellations, these works function almost like three-dimensional drawings, shaped by balance, perception, and spatial tension.

Born in 1983 in Detmold, Gary Schlingheider lives and works in Berlin and Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Germany. He studied at the Berlin University of the Arts as a master student of Christine Streuli, and also worked with Pia Fries and Gregory Cumins. His work has received several awards, including the Loth Sculpture Prize at Art Karlsruhe and the Diffring Prize for Sculpture. Since 2023, he has been teaching at the Berlin University of the Arts in the department Work in Space.

Overview
Through color and form, the work unfolds as a spatial experience, blurring the boundary between painting and sculpture.
Gary Schlingheider explores the unstable threshold between painting and sculpture through reduced geometric forms, opaque color, and spatial tension. His works activate surface and volume simultaneously, turning formal restraint into a perceptual encounter.
