KOSTAS PAPAKOSTAS Greece , b. 1976

Biography
Each brushstroke is a trace of an intuitive choreography, a record of a moment in time.

Kostas Papakostas (b. Greece) is a multidisciplinary artist based in London, working primarily with painting and video. His practice explores the space between control and surrender, between what can be shaped and what must be allowed to happen.

In his video works, Papakostas observes the external world with a quiet, meditative gaze. Ordinary moments — light shifting through leaves, the stillness of water, the passing of time — are transformed into reflections on impermanence and the human condition.

His paintings, on the other hand, turn inward. They emerge from a visceral and physical process rooted in intuition rather than thought. Working on the floor, the artist moves around the canvas in an almost choreographic rhythm — circling, stepping back, bending low. Each painting is made in a single gesture, one breath at a time. There are no corrections, no layering; only the moment when breath, timing and intention align.

This disciplined spontaneity defines Papakostas’ approach — a search for honesty through movement. His works are not representations but records of presence, traces of awareness captured in motion.

Papakostas’ work has been exhibited internationally and forms part of private and corporate collections worldwide. Alongside his artistic practice, he is an award-winning Art Director, having led global campaigns for Sony PlayStation, Apple, MTV and Christian Dior, among others. This dual experience informs his understanding of rhythm, composition, and emotion — whether on screen, in motion, or on canvas.

Through both mediums, Kostas Papakostas seeks to reveal what lies beyond control: the fleeting balance where awareness becomes gesture, and movement becomes meaning.

Overview

I’m not trying to make a statement or tell a story. I’m trying to be present. To let the painting break free from my control and find its own destiny. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn’t. But when it does, something real slips through.

Kostas Papakostas is a Greek multidisciplinary artist based in London, predominantly working with painting and video. His video work is observational, looking outwards to the world. It aims to transform the mundane into contemplative and examine nature and the human condition. His paintings on the other hand look inwards and have a constant flow and movement. They are a result of a visceral and physical process, which comes from a place where thought, judgment and expectations do not matter. Kostas' work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in private and corporate collections.
In addition to his artistic practice, Kostas is an award-winning Art Director. He has developed and art directed global campaigns for Sony PlayStation, Apple, MTV and Christian Dior amongst others.
