HANS SCHÜLE GERMANY, b. 1965

Biography
Hans Schüle transforms steel into a language of tension and breath, where geometry and biomorphic flow meet in forms that seem at once precise, porous, and alive.

THE INTERSECTION OF GEOMETRY AND ORGANIC FORM

Born in 1965 in Neckarsulm, Germany, Hans Schüle is a sculptor and painter whose practice is defined by a sustained dialogue between geometric rigor and organic movement. Working primarily in steel, he produces forms that move between angular and curvilinear, monumental and intimate, their surfaces shifting from vivid color to monochrome and raw metallic finishes.

Originally trained as a graphic designer, Schüle went on to study painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Berlin University of the Arts between 1991 and 1997, where he worked under Professor Jürgen Reipka. This dual formation continues to shape his approach, allowing industrial material to be transformed into compositions of striking precision, tension, and apparent lightness.

Though constructed in steel, his sculptures often seem to defy their own material weight. By bringing biomorphic impulses into contact with geometric structure, Schüle creates works that hover between construction and growth, discipline and spontaneity. In doing so, he opens a fertile dialogue between sculpture, perception, and the underlying systems of the natural world.

Over the course of his career, Schüle has exhibited widely in Germany, Canada, and Switzerland, with notable presentations at the Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin, Kunstmuseum Singen, and Gallery Jones in Vancouver. His work has been recognized with several distinctions, including the Werkstattpreis of the Erich Hauser Art Foundation in 2000 and the Sculpture Prize of the Lebens Art Foundation in 2011.

Overview
"In my artistic practise I submit different materials to my will. My favoured material, metal, transforms from basic elements into highly sculpted form at the touch of my hand."
Hans Schüle shapes steel into a sculptural language where geometric rigor meets organic movement. Moving between angular construction and biomorphic flow, his works test how weight, lightness, and spatial openness can coexist.
